HOW THE FUTURE OF DECORATIVE LIGHT WILL BE

A new experience, never felt before by a lighting company like Panzeri. At the headquarters of Biassono, last April 7th there was a round table about ‘The Future of decorative lighting’, attended by designers and lighting designers, journalists and experts.

The event was intended to make the point on decorative lighting, about the direction design, technology and materials are taking. A reflection, this, made a few days after the close of the most important international trade fair, the German ‘Light + Building’, where more discussion points have been born.

The idea of Panzeri, was to hear different voices, discuss, compare and listen to points of view outside the company, acting as a link between those who draw, those who design and those who speak of this world. Around the table of this particular discussion sat the hosts Enzo Panzeri (Designer) and Norberto Panzeri (Partner and Head of Research & Development), the architect Carmen Ferrara, architect and lighting designer Alexander Bellman (Studio C14), the lighting designer Eugenia Marcolli (Studio Metis Lighting), the industrial designer Takahide Sano with his colleague of Studio Sano Francesca Preguerra, but also two media representatives like Alessandro Mitola, Content Manager online edition of Icon Design and Andrea Calatroni, journalist who writes for the magazine Luce.

The topics.

The streets the sector is taking are varied, as well as several and free have been the observations of the participants at the event organized by Panzeri. The main topics that have animated the debate were the balance between design and mass production of lamps, how new technologies are influencing shapes and light management, the choices that Italy should do to continue to be competitive on international market, as well as an overview of what is happening abroad from the point of view of product innovations. 

Here some of the most important considerations came out during the round table.

Will LEDs continue to dominate the scene?

Today the real challenge is that of dimmeration and domotics with light control by App for smartphones. Next year Euroluce will see the comparison between the various manufacturers just on these issues. What about the future? The concept of the use of lamps has changed because they are manufactured in a different way. In Italy we are well placed because we have the design. The LED technology has almost established. We have a kind of LED that has an almost certain future for at least two years, a very long historical time in our sector. From this perspective Italy has a great future in the study of new forms. ” (Norberto Panzeri)

In 99 I was at a conference where I talked of technologies for lighting engineering calculation because we were among the first to use advanced calculation models. Meanwhile we talked about LEDs and at that time a professor of physics said that with LEDs we could never get sufficient yield values and the shades of white we were aiming. In this moment there is an uncontrolled growth curve and it is hard to be able to keep up with evolution. You project one thing that after six months is old.” (Alexander Bellman)

It’s true that LED technology can be placed anywhere. In Bulgari hotel in London in 2009, we have planned it in the profile that traditionally separates the upholstery from white finish of the vertical wall which then continues on the ceiling. Later this solution became a standard lighting fixture in the catalogue. In a hotel room where floor space is often very limited, to eliminate a decorative lamp from the ground that contributes to the general light and integrate it into an architectural detail, where then disappears, is a real success. and even it becomes colorful and clever, because it is controlled by a centralized system able to create different scenes. LED allows unexpected and miniaturized shapes, that also make impact in terms of lux, for indirect emissions too. It is a step forward for new trends..” (Eugenia Marcolli)

Design and produce lighting: what happens now and in the future.

Philippe Starck says ‘future is always right‘, a hard and strong sentence. We must not be afraid of the future and on the other side we have to trust it. Up to 4 or 5 years ago I thought that LEDs were not offering performance. But now we have to convert all products in order to offer an entire catalogue to LEDs. We must have our feet on the ground and clear prospects”. (Enzo Panzeri)

The daylight control exists since ’97. The problem is to look for a way to deal with new technologies in order to handle things in the smartest way possible. Italy has the ability to do so. I trust that it is possible. I do not believe that mass production in large numbers will work, however the answer is in customization and personalization.” (Alexander Bellman)

Production on large numbers no longer works. Already in the ’90s fashion had understood that the million pieces did not make sense. A known leader in the production of coffee machines with which we have worked, produces millions of pieces, but they are all different and personalized to each other. Thanks also to design times, that even if elaborate, are faster especially in subsequent modifications and variants.” (Francesca Preguerra)

Soon will come robots. In Japan they are spread everywhere, the two countries are not comparable. Here, unfortunately, some production systems are obsolete and continue to be used. Robot, with the fourth industrial revolution that is coming from Germany, is fed from the information that runs from the various parts of the world through the Internet network and that instructs it for the pieces production. Italy is far behind in this.” (Takahide Sano)

We must change the way of thinking by taking into account what is happening in countries such as Japan, where through internet 2,000 products are realized without ‘look at each other’. I think there is little blood in that system and being Italian, I’m inclined to the creation of a product with soul and creativity, reason why we are famous all over the world. Realities like Panzeri are fundamental to this process. Just be careful not to neglect the technical development in order not to be a non-starter. Aesthetics and technology must go hand in hand.” (Carmen Ferrara)

IoT: Internet of Things soon in lighting too.

In Japan IoT (Internet of Things) is widespread in small companies too. They are already operating this computerized aspect. The evolution in action is the relationship between a big center and the small. Targeted productions immediately delivered to have minimal stores. Concerning lamps, many sensors scattered everywhere commanded by Internet are already used. The ‘first-world’ does the software. Design is part of the ‘second world’. The ‘third World’ produces.” (Takahide Sano)

 

Profiles of the participants in the round table:

Norberto Panzeri. Always active in the lighting world, in the company he holds the position of head of research and development, research of new technologies and LED components and development of the same on Panzeri range. He is on the board of Assoluce (FederlegnoArredo) and recently appointed President of the Section Design and Furniture, and Vice President of the Fashion Group, Design, Furniture of Assolombarda (Confindustria Monza Brianza Milan).

Enzo Panzeri. Historical designer of the homonymous family company, has designed the 70% of the products in the catalogue and now would like to insert new signatures in the collections to differentiate styles and increase the ranges to propose to an international market always looking for unique items and prestige.

Carmen Ferrara. Graduated from the Polytechnic of Milan, she loves the temporary architecture of fashion Prêt-à-porter in Milan and the world of the stands. Multifaceted and creative, she is a product designer. “Carmen” by Panzeri has her name.

Francesca Preguerra. Linguist and translator, she speaks five languages: English, German, French, Japanese and Swedish. She worked for the Japanese multinational companies and as “Buyer” of the major Paris and Milan fashion brands. Now fashion and design trend Scout as well as Takahide Sano wife and collaborator.

Takahide Sano. Industrial Designer from ’76, he began his career in Japan working 12 years for Toshiba and setting up hundreds of museums. After his transfer to Italy, he collaborated with Honda and with important appliance companies such as Candy, Imetec and DeLonghi. Known for his television parenthesis with Fabio Fazio and Teo Teocoli, now develops products for industrial design in the broadest sense.

Andrea Calatroni. Ex architect and designer, now journalist of the magazine Light. Eccentric and curious, he is always looking for innovations and news in the lighting scene.

Alessandro Mitola.
Graduated from the Catholic University, writes for Icon Design, the new publication of Mondadori, and has a passion for Photography and Visual Design.

Eugenia Marcolli. One of the most long lived Senior Lighting Designer of the famous Metis Lighting studio in Milan, of the Architects Marinella Patetta and Claudio Valent. Graduated from the Polytechnic of Milan, is one of the few who had the fortune to follow the lessons of Achille Castiglioni. Passionate with light, she knows to combine the pure lighting design by creating light installations, giving free rein to the creativity that characterizes her.

Alexander Bellman. Founder of Studio C14, for twenty years designing both architecture and lighting to cross sectors ranging from retail to next-generation buildings, in Europe, America and China. There are also staging, theatrical sets and the creation of custom made lamps. He taught Lighting Design at Politecnico in Milan, at IULM, and L.U.N.A. in Bologna.
