The lamp that creates atmosphere at La Cervara Abbey

The magical ambience of rooms with views of the sea, the wonderful discovery that we are somehow a part of it.

La Cervara Abbey is one of Liguria’s many treasures, hidden among the rise and fall of the coastline’s rocky cliffs. This historic site lies between Portofino and Santa Margherita Ligure, on one of Italy’s best-known and most spectacular stretches of coast.

A national monument.

The ancient charm of this place is felt immediately as we approach and glimpse the distinctive tower and the facade of the Church. The first stone in the building of the monastery, dedicated to St Jerome, was laid in the summer of 1361. The building was the work of Benedictine monks, who were also responsible for the monastery’s enormous prestige throughout Europe over the subsequent centuries. La Cervara Abbey was declared a National Monument in 1912.

For the past 25 years, the former abbey has been kept in excellent condition by a family who fell in love with it and have refused to yield to the logic of business. The sumptuously refurbished rooms and the gardens, attended with passion and meticulous care, are the setting for business and cultural events, and religious ceremonies can still be held in the church. However, the owners have no intention of allowing themselves to be persuaded to open a full-scale hotel.

Searching for a special place, we discover we’re part of it.

Strolling within the walls of La Cervara, we feel we’re in an enchanted place, where time stands still. We see respect for the building’s history in the style and quality of the maintenance and restoration work, but also in the furnishings and accessories. We’re on a quest to find a special venue for our events, so we’re looking carefully at the details, searching every corner and every room for new experiences and emotions.

The cultural and historical sensitivity of the keepers of this place is admirable, and we are delighted, not to mention proud, to find in its rooms a little part of us, a fruit of our labours.  We enter the bedrooms enclosed in the magnificent tower, and discover that Panzeri’s Carré wall and table lamps have been chosen to create the perfect atmosphere; here in a version customised for the client, with the structure painted white and rectangular or square-shaped lampshades. As we continue our tour, we find that this is not the only use of our lamp; it also appears in the gorgeous sea-facing “Butterfly” and “Oltremare” rooms.

After this delightful revelation, we go out into the historic Italian-style garden, the only one of its kind in Liguria, overlooking the Mediterranean. The perfect conclusion to our visit, at sunset, immersed in nature and with the sensation of being surrounded on all sides by the sea, with the Gulf of Tigullio on one side and the Promontory of Portofino on the other.
